What is SharePoint sprawl?

SharePoint sprawl is the uncontrolled growth of SharePoint sites, Microsoft Teams, and their underlying storage that accumulates faster than an organization can govern it. It happens when self-service provisioning lets users create workspaces without ownership, lifecycle, or naming rules. The result is duplicated, abandoned, and orphaned sites that inflate storage cost, widen the attack surface, and make oversharing and stale-content problems harder to find.
Sprawl is not a SharePoint defect, it is the predictable outcome of self-service provisioning without lifecycle rules. When any user can spin up a site or Team in seconds but nothing retires them, the tenant fills with duplicated, abandoned, and orphaned workspaces.
The governance problem is compounding: every ungoverned workspace is another place for oversharing to hide, another owner to track down, and another line on the storage bill. Controlling sprawl means attaching ownership, expiry, and naming policy to provisioning, then reviewing inactive workspaces on a fixed cadence.
