What is grounding data?

Grounding data is the organizational content an AI system is given access to so its answers reflect real, current information rather than only the model's training. In enterprise AI it usually means the documents, sites, and records an assistant can retrieve at query time. Because the assistant can surface anything in its grounding set, that set defines the AI's exposure: overshared content that is in scope becomes answerable.
Grounding is what makes an enterprise AI assistant useful: instead of guessing from training, it retrieves your actual content and answers from it. It is also what makes access hygiene an AI-safety problem.
The rule is simple and unforgiving: an assistant can surface anything in its grounding set that the prompting user is allowed to see. So the grounding data, plus the permissions on it, is the real boundary of what the AI can expose. Getting that boundary right is most of what “AI readiness” means in practice.
